The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:
• Conduct routine and targeted environmental inspections and assessments and ensure findings are accurately recorded
• Identify environmental risks, legal deviations and non-conformances and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions
• Monitor compliance with applicable environmental legislation, licences, permits, environmental management plans, and company standards
• Implement and monitor environmental initiatives and improvement programmes within the area of responsibility
• Maintain accurate environmental data on the applicable risk management reporting systems
• Maintain environmental incident, non-conformance and corrective action registers and ensure actions are tracked and closed within agreed timeframes
• Conduct or participate in environmental incident investigations and root cause analysis, including TapRooT or other approved methodologies where required
• Conduct environmental audits and participate in internal, client and external regulatory audits
• Conduct and/or facilitate environmental aspects and impacts assessments and ensure significant environmental risks are appropriately managed
• Identify trends and recurring environmental issues and provide recommendations to operational management
• Support the preparation and submission of statutory and regulatory environmental reports, where delegated
• Engage effectively with employees, contractors, clients, regulators, and other stakeholders on environmental matters
• Demonstrate effective self-management and accountability in alignment with company values and leadership initiatives
Minimum requirements
• Environmental Aspects and Impacts training
• Root cause analysis techniques training (preferred)
• Auditing on ISO 14000 principles (preferred)
• MS Office proficient [Word and Excel]
• Exposure to SharePoint, or similar software
• Ability to recognise environmental risks, deviations and nonconformance, through careful observation
• Planning and organising skills
• Ethical and professional
• Problem solving skills to contribute practical environmental solutions within set parameters
• Attention to detail and auditing skills
• Good English written and verbal communication skills
• Must be physically fit for underground visits
• Proven experience in implementing environmental management plans and monitoring compliance with applicable environmental legislation
• Experience with environmental incident investigations and root cause analysis
• Experience developing, implementing, and tracking corrective and preventative actions
• Working knowledge of mine environmental management systems and reporting requirements
• Knowledge and practical application of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and relevant subsidiary legislation
• Working knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) insofar as it relates to environmental risk and mining operations
• Experience engaging with operational management, contractors, employees, and relevant external stakeholders
